"Hysterical bodies’
— through art and through research, I intend to show that a body becomes ‘hystericised’ when: a) The body is othered — This occurs when a body is literally made to be other, and I want to explore how this occurs not only through systems of oppression, but also religious structures. In this sense, saints and holy figures become othered into the realm of the sacrosanct. The agency here being on the ‘hystericiser’[sic.] of bodies. b) When the body is struck with the realisation of ‘self’ as other. This idea is heavily informed by Bell Hooks’ ‘Aesthetic of blackness’ where she beautifully demonstrates the realisation of the body as other, through locations and systems of culture which are fundamentally at odds with the lives of minorities. The agency here being on the ‘hystericised body’ |
"Corpi isterici"
Anietie (b.1996) is a London based artist of Afro-Caribbean descent with a theory-based practice.
Classically trained in fine art before attending Oxford University to read History of Art, he has experience in undertaking commissions and self-curated projects in traditional media including etching, oil-painting, and illustration.
His exposure to critical theory and time based media during the middle of his academic studies and residence in Venice during the 2017 Biennale, transformed his artistic practice, pushing it to become one that is critical. Anietie continues to experiment with the ways in which a dialogue exists between art theory and practice
Currently he is exploring the theme 'hysteria' using Deleuze's ideas presented in his 'Logic of Sensation' (1969). From this, he investigates the 'hysterical' to examine the means by which the body escapes itself through interdisciplinary fine art media.
